The Cleveland Heights Fire/EMS Division, a component of the Department of Public Safety, provides fire protection and paramedic service for the residents of Cleveland Heights. It is known for its superior response times and excellent, on-going training. Cleveland Heights has an 80-member Fire Division covering 8.2 square miles. The Fire Division responds to more than 5,000 runs each year. Our two fire stations are:
Fire Station #1 - 3445 Mayfield Road
Fire Station #2 - 12560 Cedar Road
Cleveland Heights uses the emergency 9-1-1 enhanced system for emergency notification. Fire Division ambulances are staffed by paramedics who transport victims to the closest and most appropriate of several nearby hospitals.
Notice of Privacy of Protected Health Information
The Cleveland Heights Fire Department is required by law to maintain the privacy of certain confidential health care information, known as Protected Health Information or PHI, which is mandated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This Notice is given to all persons whom we generate any medical information. The Notice describes your legal rights, advises you of our privacy practices and lets you know how the Cleveland Heights Fire Department is permitted to use and disclose PHI about you. Mutual Response Pact
The Cities of Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights and University Heights have a mutual response pact through which each City will automatically respond to any emergency fire incidents within the corporate limits of each of the cities. The cities share a Joint Dispatch Center located at Station #1, 3445 Mayfield Road.
Cleveland Heights firefighters participate in a regional special rescue team that provides rope, ice, confined space and trench rescue services.
Public Education
- Members of the Fire Division conduct the safety training classes for all Safety Town participants and first-graders each year.
- The Fire Division, through the Fire Prevention Bureau, participates in the Greater Cleveland Juvenile Firesetter Task Force for the evaluation and treatment of juveniles adjudicated for arson-related behaviors.
- Fire Division spokespersons are available to speak to community groups on a number of safety-related topics.
- Fire station tours are conducted in January, May, August and December.
Fire Safety
Please take note of the following basic fire safety rules:
- All residential occupancies shall have a smoke detector on each floor.
- Unvented kerosene heaters are not permitted.
- Open burning within city limits is not permitted - also, no burning of leaves and no bonfires.
- Fireworks (without a permit) are not permitted.
- Barbecues must be at least 10 feet from any structure housing two or more families.
Community Services
Operation Save-a-Life, a program of the American Red Cross and the Cleveland Heights Fire Division, provides FREE smoke alarms and batteries to Cleveland Heights residents. Smoke alarms are distributed by Cleveland Heights firefighters at no cost to residents. To apply for a free smoke alarm (verification of residency required), visit the Fire Chief's Office, located at Cleveland Heights City Hall, 40 Severance Circle.
Hydrant Flushing
During the months of April and May (weekdays only), the Cleveland Heights Fire Division flushes fire hydrants throughout the city. As a consequence of the flushing, a great deal of sediment is raised. Be sure to check the cold water flow first to make sure it is clear during this period. If for any reason rust gets into clothing being washed, rust remover is available at Station #1, 3445 Mayfield Road, and at the Cleveland Heights Division of Water, located on the lower level of City Hall. If water is not clear, turn the water off and let the sediment settle. Fire station tours are conducted weekdays.
